Wheelchair basketball equipment for schools – 2010
The Motivation Foundation, based in Bristol, is running a
schools wheelchair basketball programme for over 2,000 children at
20 schools in South West England. The programme, due to commence
in 2011 will provide equipment and training needed to educate
children about Paralympic sport and provide opportunities for
children with and without disabilities to play sport together in a
fully inclusive environment.
The programme is based on previous sessions by the local youth
wheelchair basketball team, the South West Scorpions, that has
proved enormously successful at changing attitudes and promoting
inclusion.
The JWCT awarded £1,030 in November 2010 to cover the costs of
two wheelchairs ten basketballs, and cones. The wheelchair and
additional equipment will be donated to a local school for
continued use after the end of the programme.
Jen Howitt-Browning, Programme Co-ordinator at the Motivation
Trust said “Funding from the JWCT has been crucial to getting our
wheelchair basketball project up and running in Somerset. The
sports wheelchairs we’ve been able to purchase will help us to
give disabled children the chance to play an exciting and
challenging sport, and help to build a local club that can get
kids playing for many years to come. We’ll be holding our first
‘have-a-go’ session when the new school term starts and we can’t
wait! Thank you to the JWCT for making all of this possible.”
